Sailplan

The Bavaria 34 was introduced in 1999 as one of a series of models ranging from 32, 34, 36 and 38 ft. All of these were actually well over a foot longer overall than the nominal size - ie the Bavaria 34 is actually 35' 5" overall. The Bavaria 34 was sold with two interior options, twin aft double cabins primarily for the charter market, and the 'owners' version (as in the yacht illustrated) with a single aft cabin.

The design is by J & J Design and is predates the ultra broad stern era of later designs, but this gives an elegant yet modern appearance - 'Yachting Monthly' described her as ".... She's also quite pretty, looks woody and well built below".

The hulls are hand-laid GRP with kevlar reinforcement at the bow. Bavaria at that time were building 3,500 boats a year and used a lot of automation in the build process. Many of these models were bought for charter use both in the UK and especially in the Mediterranean, and charter operators need boats that withstand rough treatment.

She has a 7/8ths rig and the boat illustrated here was fitted with Selden in-mast reefing as an option. When combined with Furlex genoa reefing, all lines led back to the cockpit, and an electric windlass for the anchor, this made her very easily handled.

The design was later updated slightly including a lighter interior, also by J&J Design, and retitled the "Bavaria 34 Cruiser", before it was retured in around 2003/4. In 2010 a completely different design was introduced with the same name. This later "Bavaria 34 Cruiser" was designed by Farr Design, and was actually shorter than 34 ft, but with a broader stern with a drop-down bathing platform. Recently that design was again altered to have twin wheels.
