Built in 1982-84 and launched in 1985, this Tradewind 35 is a moderately heavy displacement long-keeled yacht. This example has a Hydrovane self-steering gear and wind generator on the stern, and excellent sails. She was coppercoated in early 2021. Internally she is in nice condition, with good upholstery and Mikuni blown air heating. In the present ownership for 14 years, she is for sale now only because of a bereavement.

Sailplan

The Tradewind 35 was a development of the John Rock designed Tradewind 33 from the 1970s. Introduced in around 1980, these yachts were designed specifically for extended cruising for a small crew, with no attempt to pack in lots of accommodation. Over the years they have been built by a number of builders, notably John Rock and Frederick Mitchell in Poole. Most of the hull and deck mouldings were by Blondecell Ltd. Tradewind 35s are still now available to buy new from Tradewind Yachts in Holland, though very expensively.

This hull was sold as a kit complete with engine, wheel steering and deck fittings, by John Rock (Yachts) Ltd. in Poole in 1982. She was then taken to Holland and completed there, by an unknown boatyard, and reportedly launched in 1985. The interior fitout is very good quality.

On deck she has a cutter rig with a long flush foredeck and a very distinctive small coachroof amidships. Granny bars give security at the mast. The cockpit is relatively small and there is a large lazarette and aft deck. Some have been fitted with short stainless steel bowsprits to extend the sailplan, though this yacht does not have this. She has higher freeboard than many other long-keel designs, giving good accommodation and headroom despite the flush foredeck.

Displacement is moderately heavy (very heavy compared to a typical modern production boat) but she has a substantial twin-spreader cutter rig to drive her. This has runners but they are not used or needed in ordinary sailing.

The Tradewind 35 is one of the designs admitted to the four yearly revived Golden Globe single-handed non-stop round the world race, along with the Rustler 36 and Biscay 36 and a few others. The race rules restrict yacht designs to traditional seaworthy long-keelers, and limit the navigation equipment to that available in the 1960s - ie no GPS etc., just sextants and depth sounders.

Hydrovane

The self-draining cockpit is relatively small, given the design's blue water ethos. A very large lazarette locker is accessed by removing the curved helm seat.
